Describe a celebration
How do you celebrate New Year?
- It’s traditional that Vietnamese people celebrate New Year’s Eve with their family. I’m no exception. To welcome the new year, my family would watch fireworks together and have a feast after that. Then, we call our grandparents and other relatives to send best wishes. This precious moment will be full of cheers and joy.
How do people new year in your country?
- Many Vietnamese people prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday food which includes giò, xôi, canh măng anh banh chung – an indispensable (= absolutely necessary) dish that is tightly packed sticky with meat and mung beans filling, wrapped in banana leaves. Every household is decorated by yellow apricot blossoms or peach blossoms.
Do you still remember a new year that you celebrated?
- Yes. Quite a few actually. But the most vividly would be on New Year’s Eve of 2008 when I first learned how to wrap and cook Banh Chung – a traditional and symbolic cake of Tet holiday. Seeing my cake on the feast for ancestor worship gave me a sacred feeling that I had never had before. I felt like I was growing up and my life was turning into a new leaf.
Do you have any ceremonies to celebrate the New Year in your country?
- We have a bunch of them actually, from local festivals to national celebrations. It’s up to the point that we Vietnamese call the first lunar month the month dissipated. Throughout provinces and villages in Vietnam, they have similar festivals to wish for a fruitful harvest and moderate weather for the farmers. On national scales, celebrations about national heroes and patriots are held to show appreciation of their sacrifice to the country.
Why do people think New Year is a new beginning?
- For me, the beginning of the New Year is like a new birth. As the new year begins, I feel that I need to make changes in my life, start on a new path, do new things, and say goodbye to old habits, problems and difficulties. I see that my family and friends feel the same things. On New Year’s Eve, we often make new plans and new resolutions together.
