I/ Đôi điều về IELTS Listening Part 3
IELTS Listening part 3 thường thiên về các chủ đề học thuật. Cụ thể hơn, đó thường là các đoạn hội thoại giữa các sinh viên với giáo viên hay giữa các sinh viên với nhau về bài tập nhóm/ dự án/ đề tài nghiên cứu hoặc cũng có thể là một buổi phỏng vấn về một đề tài chuyên môn. Các dạng câu hỏi của part 3 sẽ ở dạng nối thông tin (matching information), chọn đáp án đúng (multiple choice) hoặc là điền từ còn thiếu vào bảng, đoạn văn, quy trình,..
II/ Từ vựng biểu đạt thái độ chắc chắn và từ chối trong IELTS Listening Part 3
Từ vựng biểu thị thái độ chắc chắn IELTS Listening
1/ Từ vựng biểu thị thái độ chắc chắn
Thái độ chắc chắn hay còn được hiểu là thái độ đồng tình, nhất trí với những ý kiến mà người khác đưa ra. Đây là thái độ quen thuộc trong các đoạn đối thoại part 3 của IELTS Listening, thể hiện sự tương tác giữa những nhân vật đối thoại cũng như mở đường cho chúng ta trong việc trong lựa các đáp án dựa trên những thái độ ấy. Tuy ngữ cảnh có thể thay đổi nhưng những từ ngữ biểu thị thái độ chắc chắn thường lặp đi lặp lại khá nhiều.
Một số từ thường gặp là exactly, definitely, yes, right, fine, good point, ok, certainly, sure,..
Ví dụ:
- JAKE: OK. But isn’t that of less importance? I mean, doesn’t the impact of reduced emissions on air pollution have a more significant effect on people’s health?
- AMY: Certainly, in some cities bike-sharing had made a big contribution to that. And also helped to cut the number of cars on the road significantly.
- AMY: But some technical things are really important – like a fully functional app – so people can make payments and book bikes easily. Places which haven’t invested in that have really struggled.
- JAKE: Good point … Some people say there shouldn’t be competing companies offering separate bike-sharing schemes, but in some really big cities, competition’s beneficial and anyway one company might not be able to manage the whole thing.
- AMY: Right. Deciding how much to invest is a big question. Cities which have opened loads of new bike lanes at the same time as introducing bike-sharing schemes have generally been more successful – but there are examples of successful schemes where this hasn’t happened … What does matter though – is having a big publicity campaign.
- JAKE: Definitely. If people don’t know how to use the scheme or don’t understand its benefits, they won’t use it. People need a lot of persuasion to stop using their cars.

- STEPHANE: That’s good. I remember some frightening ones I saw as a child and I can still see them vividly in my mind, years later! Pictures can be so powerful, just as powerful as words. I’ve always enjoyed drawing, so that’s the field I want to go into when I finish the course. I bet that module will be really helpful.
- TREVOR: I’m sure it will. We also studied comics in that module, but I’m not convinced of their value, not compared with books. One of the great things about words is that you use your imagination, but with a comic you don’t have to.

Như vậy, ta có thể thấy những từ thể hiện thái độ chắc chắn thực sự xuất hiện rất nhiều và nếu ta chú ý vào những từ ngữ này, việc đưa ra đáp án sẽ phần nào đạt được độ chính xác cao hơn.
2/ Từ vựng biểu thị thái độ từ chối
Từ chối hay phủ định là một trong những thái độ không còn xa lạ trong IELTS Listening part 3. Cũng như những từ vựng biểu thị thái độ chắc chắn, những từ ngữ thuộc loại này cũng lặp lại khá nhiều. Nhóm từ này được chia theo hai cấp độ: bác bỏ trực tiếp và ngụ ý bác bỏ.
Từ vựng biểu thị thái độ từ chối
Bác bỏ trực tiếp:
Thể hiện qua các từ : No; I don’t think so, but/however, not really, certainly not, hate,..
Ví dụ:
- SUPERVISOR: Hmm. Now, popular music has quite different expectations. Đi you read Mike Frost’s article about the dress of women performers in popular music?
- JOANNA: No

- Iris: As long as it’s not short answers. I hate those types of questions.

- JAKE: And yet it’s one of the best-used schemes … Dublin’s an interesting example of a success story.
- AMY: It must be because the public transport system’s quite limited.
- JAKE: Not really – there’s no underground, but there are trams and a good bus network. I’d say price has a lot to do with it. It’s one of the cheapest schemes in Europe to join.
- AMY: But the buses are really slow – anyway the weather certainly can’t be a factor!
- JAKE: No – definitely not. The London scheme’s been quite successful

Ngụ ý bác bỏ:
Người nói vẫn thể hiện thái độ phủ nhận, bác bỏ hay không đồng tình về một vấn đề nhưng dùng những cụm từ giúp giảm nhẹ mức độ gay gắt, khiến lời nói trở nên tế nhị, lịch sự hơn.
Ví dụ:
As a matter of fact/ Actually: Thực chất là
- Mipha: As for the last part of the presentation, let’s see…. maybe ‘Migration’?
- Simon: As a matter of fact, the life of a typical salmon is all about “migration” already. I think in order to make things clearer, the last phase in the life cycle should be called “Homeward migration”.

Theo từ điển Cambridge, cụm từ này dùng để thể hiện thái độ không đồng tình với ý kiến được đưa ra, ngụ ý điều đó trái với thực tế.
Instead of/ Rather than: thay vì
Ví dụ:
- Henry: Rather than making a short game that is consistently good, Ubisoft would make a long game which only draws the players’ attention for the first few hours.

At first/ Initially: Ban đầu
- Stephanie: To be honest, at first, there were so many topics that I wanted to cover. I thought Starbucks’ story would be boring. Everybody knew about it.
- Xavier: Yes, many other students said the same thing. So why the change of heart?
- Stephanie: Well, initially I chose Walmart. Then, I saw many of my classmates working on the same project and I was a bit afraid. I mean if their reports were well-written, it could hurt my score a little, right? So, in the end, I decided to write about the story of Starbucks, which I also had a lot of background knowledge and understanding of in advance.

Người nói đưa ra cụm từ “at first”, “initially” sau đó thường đưa ra sự thay đổi trong quyết định của mình.
