Đề bài: Many people are working longer and longer hours. What are the reasons and effects?

Nowadays, it is increasingly common for workers to spend long hours at work. This essay will delineate the reasons underlying this trend and discuss the effects.

There are two main rationales for worker’s overtime working. In recent years, while living costs have increased significantly, salaries remain almost unchanged. To make ends meet, many workers have to find ways to boost their income, and in many companies, employees are paid a premium for their overtime work. A more common situation these days, however, is unpaid overtime working with people staying longer at work without pay to prove their dedication to their job. This is because managers’ evaluations of workers are sometimes based on the effort they see rather than work performance, which is sometimes harder to determine. For example, in sales departments in export companies in Vietnam, it can take several months before a sales representative can close a deal. When results take this long to be noticed, anyone who wants to leave earlier than their co-workers might be seen as not putting insufficient effort.

Resulting from this trend is the problem of decreased work-life balance. First and foremost, it is those who work long hours that have to sacrifice time originally meant for their personal interests, such as pursuing a hobby or spending time with their loved ones. Secondly, there might be familial conflicts relating to overtime working. Exhaustion from work can make it harder to have quality time with one’s partner. Arranging activities can also be more difficult, especially if both the husband and wife have to work longer hours. If this issue persists, the relationship is likely to suffer. Finally, problems with friends might arise as those who do overtime might have to forgo friend gatherings, which has an undesirable impact on their friendships.

In conclusion, workers are spending more and more time at work because of financial and career reasons, and this trend is negatively affecting the personal lives of the workforce.
